Raya Week Pt.1

Home at last. I've been longing to sleep in my own bed. Sleeping on beds other than the one back home somehow does not give you that same sense of satisfaction. The first thing which comes to mind for me when I think of 'home' is 'sleep'...Is that a bad sign?

The thing is, i've been so excited to come back home. And now that i'm actually here, i'm at a loss at what to do. I SHOULD be doing some light research or perhaps giving some thought into the upcoming assignments. But all i've accomplished is eating, waking up late, eating, lazying around and did I mention eating? But in between the aforementioned activities, i've managed to squeeze in a few outings.

Before I headed back home, I managed to wrap up my assignments, presentations and mid-semester examinations. Overall, I would say that I fared average-ish, which is such a relief. Well, water under the bridge. I'm anticipating a whole new wave of *gulp* assignments.

- after the Building Construction II presentation.

Soph, KW and I managed to do some catching up with Pam over a game of badminton. Running around the court breathlessly was a sign that my stamina (if I ever had any) was decreasing.

- post-badminton game.

Back in Penang, i've been going out quite frequently and will probably continue on doing so for the rest of the week. Just today I hung out with Wye Sern, whom i've been meaning to meet, and Boon Yong. We just went out to the mall, had lunch and talked crap (Ahhh...the stuff great outings are made of). And before we headed back home, we decided to pay a visit to the new INTI campus in BJ.

- at INTI with WS & BY.

Walking along the halls and seeing the noticeboards sure brings back memories. Same goes when we stared at the old campus from the new building which is right beside one another.

- the old campus sprawled amongst the greenery.

Oh, and guess what we saw on one of the noticeboards?!:

This:
- That's me! And Boon Yong in front of me.

and this:
- Guess who's that flanked by Lee Xin and Kai Xin! (Fyi, the arrow was not meant to point at your boobs).

Current Music Obsession: Vampire Weekend.

Vampire Weekend is an indie band from New York formed just 2 years ago. Their music is pretty much influenced by Western classical music and African popular music. A very interesting mix which comes out well. Their songs may not be chart topping as they're an indie band, but they have definitely broken into the charts.

I like the songs Oxford Comma, Campus, Boston and A-punk.

Week long break.

So, just to update you guys. Next week is Raya week which means I have a week off from college and the following week is Activity week where we're supposed to go someplace and do some stuff which i'm not very well informed of.

Anyways, i'm heading back to Penang probably tomorrow after class and will be spending a week plus back home. It's been like 2 months. But the thing is, I just found out my parents are going abroad on Saturday for A WEEK! Which is basically about the length of time i'm back home *smacks head*. Nevertheless, at least I get to see them for a day or two...

So, i'll update more when I reach home.

Stay tuned for more.

Flashy or Fugly: Wayfarers & Traditionals.

Big sunglasses have been in vogue for a couple of years now. The big, huge ones which almost always obscure your face. And because of this enthusiasm in gigantic sunnies, it's only natural that the Ray-Ban Wayfarers are in fashion again. That, and also the company's constant attempt to position them in pop culture.

The Wayfarers were very popular back in the 1950s and 60s and because of their strategic marketing and 'showcasing' them on celebrities, lately, they are enjoying a revival. Yes this revival has been going on for a while now. So much so that other fashion brands have jumped in on the wagon and created Wayfarer-inspired sunglasses, but who's really complaining?

The Wayfarers are fashonable plastic shades which have an atheletic twist and can come is a variety of colours. Although I usually consider sunglasses as a form of eye protection, I do have to admit that they are a fashion statement in itself. Shades can make of break your style. But the thing about Wayfarers is that because of their unique frames, they almost seem to fit and flatter faces of all shapes. Same goes to the Ray-Ban Traditionals which are quite similar to the Wayfarers. They, too have a collection of shapes which can complement a broad range of faces.

- Ray-Ban Traditionals pay a close resemblance to Wayfarers (maybe it's part of the family) and flatter a range of faces.

Personally, I think they're great for their flexibility. Being able to accomodate different faces and they can even be worn with formal wear! And, Oh yeah, they protect your eyes!

So, what do you think?

Slightly Relieved.

Classes for this week has ended and that means that my two-week-long craze with assignments are slowly dissipating. The comic strip submission was on Monday and I had an Architecture History II mid-term earlier today which was kinda tough (Anyone knows the answer to this question: Which country never colonized the US? Britain, Spain, Portugal or the Netherlands) And I was supposed to have a Building Construction II presentation on Tuesday which got postponed to today which again got pushed back to next Tuesday. Wearing all that formal wear for nothing...*grumbles*

On the brightside, next week will be the week before the Raya break! Which means I finally get to return home after spending 2 months here. It's a week long and i'm looking forward to it...the well-deserved break after 2 hellacious weeks of brain-liquifying tasks.

On a seperate note, I did some internal spring cleaning to my cellphone.

One done.

I can't believe I managed to finish the comic strip let alone finish it in time. I was striving to complete it on Sunday, slaving away on my desk, leaving only for the occasionnal snack/bathroom/Mythbusters break. I was not looking forward to this project at all coz' firstly, human figures are not my forte. And I tend to get the proportions all wrong.

But it turned out quite alright. Although there are some frames which obviously suck, I was satisfied. I'm not expecting good grades for this particular assignment as I didn't manage to fulfill the site relation aspect. All I was aiming for was to complete it in time and with...dignity?

Well, one assignment down, another 2 exams, one report and one presentation to go. These two weeks of sleepless nights, unhealthy meals and brain-cracking is one hellish ride. I hope it ends soon.

- Should I get an afro?

Still Sane

I've been crazed. Even as I type this i'm working on an assignment. In the past week alone I had a Studio mock-up evaluation, a 10 minute Building Services Video to edit, an Architecture History presentation and a Building Construction mid-semester exam. So basically, yeah, i'm a little stressed.

To add to the already daunting workload, i've got a Studio submisson this coming Monday, a Building Construction presentation on Tuesday, an Architecture History mid-semester exam on Thursday and a possible Building Services one on that day too. Can anyone spare me some cyanide?

I'll be very busy this coming week and I hope that the week after that (which is the week prior to Raya), I would have completed the assignments and done the exams.

A great way to maintain sanity, is to work well with your friends and not just only on assignments.

Stick Figures

I think I was in Standard 3. A teacher came into the class as a substitute for an absent teacher. I vaguely remember her name but I reckon she's called Mrs. Dharma. All I remember is that she has tan skin, she's not very tall and is a bit on the plump side. Apparently, she is quite notorious for being very strict and condescending.

After the class greeted her 'Good Morning', she starts to hand out empty pieces of paper. She told us that since we had nothing scheduled for the next two periods, we are to occupy our time by producing a drawing of our loved ones. Just a simple drawing of our family.

I freaked.

I suck at drawing, let alone drawing human figures. I pearched my pencil on the empty piece of paper and hesitated. I knew I suck at drawing. I lifted my head up and gazed around the classroom through my glasses, staring blankly at all my friends who were already sketching feverishly. They just seemed so enthused while I on the other hand was absolutely and blatantly indifferent about the whole task.

I attempted. I recall doodling on the piece of paper. I drew four stick figures to represent my family. They were all holding hands. It's the type of drawing you'd expect to see from a 4 year old kid. Stick people, disporportionate body parts, disfigured faces.

Then, SHE walked past. Mrs. Dharma. With a perplexed face, she peered down on my drawing.

"That's NOT how you draw people! Does your family look like this?" she remarked.

"No", I stammered.

She continued to lament on how pathetic my sketch was while the rest of the class tuned in to every ridicule and stark comment made. It was one of the most embarassing moments I encountered as a kid. That incident affected me. I was no longer looking forward to Art lessons and of course I had an immediate dislike for Mrs. Dharma.

That was that.

My new Studio assignment has been handed out. And you guessed it...it has something to do with drawing. We're supposed to draw/sketch/render by hand or computer, a comic strip measuring 2 f*cking meters. 2 WHOLE METERS. The lecturers are clearly sadists.

It must feature a Superhero of our choice with a befitting storyline and the background to the scene is none other than Kg. Baru. I may have gotten over my primary incident, but I am praying hard for me to get through this formidable task and produce good work. I hope I don't end up with stick figures again.
