Picnic! | 28.06.10

Yalah, I know it was like a month ago, but then the photos we took that day were pretty nice so I just wanted to share then with you!

It was our bi-annual end-of-the-semester picnic! Although a lot of the gang couldn't make it, we still went ahead because it was better than not having it at all. This time round, we picnicked at the Forrest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM) somewhere in Selayang. We drove there through the LDP and it wasn't as far as I initially thought it to be. But do take note, one has to pay to get into FRIM. I believe it was like one ringgit or something.

This was probably the closest to nature we ever got in all of our picnics. We were literally seated under lush rainforest trees at a stream of gushing water. Our hands busy conveying food and drinks to our mouths while our legs were carefully dipped in the cool, clear waters.

Admittedly it was not all that comfortable to sit on angular solid rocks, but once you find a good spot to settle your ass on, it was not all that bad. Another great picnic, even though the rest of the group was terribly missed, and the occasional visits by a dastardly lizard. We wrapped up the day when the monkeys came lurking around looking like they were going to pounce on our food.

And don't worry, we used bio-degradable ware and cleaned up after ourselves.

Oh, Hi!

See what me and Farah did to the auditorium seating over there! It was like a blank canvas. Heh heh. Excuse the low quality pictures as I only had my cell phone with me. This was in the DECTAR Hall at UKM, Bangi; the place where I went to help out in an Architectural camp.

At Sophia's

Sophia celebrated her birthday on Saturday night. We dined, didn't wine and enjoyed each other's company. Oh, and the food was fantastic. The night ended with a confusing and maddening board game.

Happy Birthday again.

Bacon talking

Joey posted this up and I thought it was bizarrely awesome. Having a conversation with an Artificial Intelligence. I have to say I had a decent conversation. Probably more decent than most that I've had with people online.

Juz: Are you interested in fashion?

Cleverbot: Very interested.

Juz: Really?

Cleverbot: Yes.

Juz: What kind of clothes would you wear?

Cleverbot: Normal clothes. What kind do you wear?

Juz: Anything that highlites my appearance.

Cleverbot: I am really sad right now.

Juz: Why so?

Cleverbot: The book has no plot. It just describes how pretty Edward Cullen is.

Juz: I hate that book.

Cleverbot: Do you like the movie?

Juz: Never even watched it.

Cleverbot: If you could name me what would it be?

Juz: Bacon.

Cleverbot: Bacon makes me fat.

Juz: I'm hungry.

Cleverbot: What do you want?

Juz: A milkshake.

Cleverbot: Brings all the boys to the yard.

Juz: That's kelis.

Cleverbot: Ill crush you.

Juz: Maybe a slice of cake will do.

Cleverbot: What kind of cake?

Juz: Black forrest.

Cleverbot: I really want some of that cake.

Nit Picknicking

This time around, our end-of-the-semester picnic took us all the way to Kepong, a place once unfamiliar to me; And still very foreign because a few wrong turns took me all the way to Sg. Buloh (Don't ask).

I can say that we are getting better at this picnic thing. I remember we forgot to bring cutlery for our first one and how I got really sunburnt in the second. This one went pretty smoothly. We we're fully equipped and it took us only 2 days to plan it out. It may have been drizzling, but that made the weather cool enough to sit comfortably outdoors without getting drenched. Food was ample and perfect. And I know we had a really good time.

- hyper even before the food gets flowing

- distributing glorious food

- pink floormat

- Sophia & Farah's chicken caesar salad complimented well with my vegetarian penne

- And then, Monopoly started

- I. Don't. Know. Why.

- By the lake. Yes there was a lake.

- The new mafia.

Bowling!

We went bowling today!

It's been a couple of weeks since I saw the interior of a mall. I hardly went shopping in the past month. To put it in perspective, the most exciting I bought was bread. And milk. Well, two cartons of milk. Fresh milk.

Anyway, today was an unusually casual day. We had classes but not much teaching was done. Just tutorials and then we were off to the mall for bowling. Days like this are hard to come by. More so in the next month when things start to crank up and assignments start to pour in again. I'm taking a moment to enjoy this.

Before I Left

I'm home at last. Leaving KL felt a little different this time. Maybe it's because I stayed there for about 4 months without going back home as often as I did in my earlier semesters. I guess you can say that KL has grown on me. There's more to KL than meets the eye.

So, before packing up and heading back home, I spent a few days after my critique with friends. Just soaking it all in before I left.

- We went bowling!

- And grocery shopping!

And we organised our soon-to-be semester-ly picnic. This round was at the KL Lake Gardens, on a grassy patch of land with a gentle slope, underneath the shade of an old tree with clear blue skies just visible overhead.

- having food while being seated on grass is as good as it gets.

- what's a picnic without taking random pictures?

- playing Sophia's Cranium board game.

- I love this shot!

- And of course it was the inevitable fierce-faced group shot.

Oh, and I totaly got sunburnt. Like I have patches of sunburn on my knee and my arms. But they're not as bad as I initially thought.

The Other Side of the Island.

Instead of your usual outing to Gurney or Queensbay mall which I have somewhat grown bored of, this time around Mei Zhi, Karen and I set out to discover the other side of the Island. It was the perfect opportunity since I had to drive all the way to Batu Feringghi to pick Karen up.

- On a strip of beach at Batu Feringghi.

- Mei Zhi & Karen.

- On the road, somewhere in the hills.

- Teluk Bahang dam.

- At the heart of Balik Pulau.

- A century old shophouse,
Balik Pulau.

- Us, with Balik Pulau in the background.

- Cheah kongsi...I think.

- Strolling along Armenian Street.

- We finished our tour with dinner at Edelweiss cafe.

After this trip, I know that there is more that is yet to be discovered on the other side of the Penang Island. One day is insufficient to explore the little nooks and crannies which await us. I hoping for a second trip there! Are you with me?

First Post of the Year

While others were making resolutions and kicking back plenty of alcohol to start the new year with a bang, I spent that moment at home outside on the balcony straining my neck just to catch a glimpse of the fireworks display which splashed the sky in beautiful bursts of light and colour. Okay, I'll admit it was only for a good 2 minutes.

I'm not exactly one who goes out at night to dance and drink the night away in some random club because:
a) I haven't got the moves to dance
b) I'm not certain about my alcohol tolerance level and
c) I hate clubs which are smoky and/or too crowded.

But I will attempt to hit the clubs or bars when the time and conditions are right. Right now, you must be going "Is he seriously ranting about clubbing? I mean clubbing?! How complicated is that? Like you go in drink, laugh, dance and you get out! Like SERIOUSLY!"

YES, I can read minds.

Anyways, I'm not going to bore you with the details of how I approached the balcony to welcome in 2009 with a bang, or should I say, lack thereof...wayyyyy lack thereof. The few days after New Years have been pretty awesome. I hung out with friends and family which completely reassured me that my life is not all that depressing.

Here are just some of the pictures from our sorta high school group reunion. We had a good time bowling and then proceeded to our high school to reminisce. Oh, the good old days.

- Reubs, Damien, me, ZX and KW.

One Week

We had our celebratory meal to mark the end of Studio crit and with that, the end of the semester. So, instead of typical restaurant-type celebrations, we lunched at Sentul park! Picnic Style. Let the pictures do the talkin'.

- We had fruits and fried rice

- and sandwiches and drinks

- which we ate on the grass by the lake

- in good company.

- One last shot before we packed up.

- On the way back via commute

I packed up my bags and hit the road right after lunch. Driving 4 hours all the way back to Penang. The journey was alright. Sunny weather all the way.

The weekend was madness in Penang. The island was swarmed with cars sporting license plates from all over the country. Gurney Drive and the Plaza was saturated with people all trying to squeeze into the mall for some shopping in the newly opened wing.

Today...

I'm here. I just caught a movie with Zhi Xiang earlier today. And i've finally had the time to surf the web and update after spending nearly a week without the internet.
