Table for one?

I was walking along Bintang Walk yesterday when pangs of hunger struck. I walked into Pavilion in hopes of chancing upon an eatery which I would fancy. The first shop which crossed my mind was Sakae Sushi. I was having one of my Japanese cravings again. On my way to the outlet, I passed rows of restaurants jam packed with people all dining al fresco trying to see and be seen. Table after table were people with their friends, chatting, laughing and having a good time. That's when it hit me. I'm alone.

Although my feet eventually carried me to the shop front, I turned away and left. If they say two's company and three's a crowd, then what's one? I have, in many events dined alone. But somehow I've never really given thought on the perceptions other people may have towards me, a lone diner.

So I guess my question is, is it okay to eat alone?

Do you judge a person who eats all by himself/herself in a restaurant? I mean how often do you see a person walk into a restaurant and say "Table for one please." I'm pretty sure most people pass judgement on lone diners. Either they are weirdos or have some obnoxious personality or thinking that they are really bitter to be with. The negative perceptions always surface first.

Is it even okay to have a meal anywhere alone? Grab-and-go foods like hot dogs and pretzels are safe to be consumed alone. But what about places like hawker food areas and food courts and restaurants. Places where people actually sit and have their meals. Or even a coffee house. Do you know how many times i've seen someone in a Starbucks sipping on their frappucino all alone while clicking away on their laptop mouse.

It's like this idea that people generally have, linking 'being alone' to 'being miserable'. I for one find it perfectly okay to be alone. Spending time with yourself. Having no one else to please but yourself. But then again, I am still under the impression that dining in restaurants should be done in the company of friends or family. Hawker places, okay. Food courts, maybe.

Restaurants are great places to socialize. The meals would be the medium and the conversation is the action. But when alone, you've got no one to interact against. No one to say "This creme brulee is awesome!" to except maybe to the waiter. As I see it, the act of dining alone in restaurants is simplifying an action to its most basic form: A human-being consuming food as a life source.

PS: By the way, I ended up buying hawker food to-go and ate it at home. Alone.

Post - Oh God

It's such a relief. All three exam papers have come and gone. I'm not going to dwell or sulk on the mistakes i've done in the papers. I'm not going to go through each and every question with friends or the notes just because it's all over now. Instead, now full attention is to be paid to my Studio work which I have yet to begin. I will try to allocate the work throughout the week but of course i've set aside the weekend for some unwinding.

I really want to make up for Studio as I performed below satisfaction in the two previous assignments. This third and last assignment is not only the most tedious, its also a culmination of the previous assignments and naturally would carry the most marks. I have just a week left to complete everything before the 1st of December, which is when the bloodbath criticism session shall begin.

And for now, the top priority in my to-do list is.....REST (isn't it always ;) )

Oh God

The finals have started are are going to last throughout the week. So, i'll be keeping myself busy with revisions and studying the night(make that evening) away. I'm putting off work on my studio assignment until next week when the exams are over and done with.

I'm very concerned about my Studio work as i'm not very confident in my design approach. I've still got many things to consider and to work out. My friends have had the benefit of consulting the lecturers last week on Wednesday while I was back in Penang. So, I guess i'll try my best to make do with what I have.

PS: I left my cellphone in Penang. It slipped out of my pocket into my dad's car. So, if you want to contact me, you can't. Leave me a message here or e-mail me. Thank you!

PPS: Someone had better refrain from washing their dirty laundry in public.

Shoe Lust

There are these pair of shoes I wanted that you would have probably heard of. The Laceless Converse. I thought they looked good and above all else, convienient as they are easy to slip-on and you don't have to bother about the laces because there are none. The only reason I didn't get them is probably because I already own two good pair of sneakers.

But then I spotted these:

From this angle, they seem similar to the Laceless Converse. But take a closer look and you'll notice that they have these wide elastic bands which cover the other half of the shoe giving it an asymetrical look which is so AWESOME it's crazy!

They're called 'Skymra Canvas' sneakers by Tretorn. I don't even know if they sell Tretorn sneakers in Malaysia.! I WANT these sneakers!

They come in an array of colours and can either be canvas or leather (pictured above). Someone please buy these!!! If not for me, for yourself!

Oral Sounds

I've basically accomplished the main reason why I returned to Penang for. I made a trip to the dentist today. Teeth cleaning and cavity fill. Ouch.

Okay, it's not as painful as I had expected. But then I can still hear the high-pitched drilling sounds......eeeeeeeeeeekkkkkkkkkkkkk. That sound always creeps me out. I would like to propose that dentists give their patients earplugs or earmuffs. Or even club me over the head till i'm unconscious. Please, something if anything to muffle that screeching sound of the equiptment grinding against your teeth. The same sounds which can easily equate to a scene in any horror movie.

As the process continues, the drilling bit hits your nerves and you get little jabs of pain in your tooth each time and you're just sitting there, fully conscious while you begin to taste your own blood. Then, the assistant will start to use the suction to suck the saliva shit out of your mouth. And of course you're not able to watch just what the hell is happening. All you see is the dentist staring back at your gaping mouth as he/she asks you to "open wider."

If you ask me, it's not just the pain alone. It's the whole package, inclusive of the sight, auditory and olfactory experience you're treated to. THAT's my motivation for oral hygiene.

So i'll be heading back to PJ this weekend as next week will turn Taylor's into Exam Central. I'll spend beautiful Monday with Architecture History II and Thursday with Building Construction II. And lastly, I'll wrap up the week with Building Services I on glorious Friday. Three papers in one week. Great.....just great.

Get your funk on.

+ Listen to This

I think this is one of the best songs i've heard in a while. It's funky, fresh, futuristic and at the same time, its got that old school rock. So jump into the funky soul train and listen! She does some fancy footwork in the video too!
