Love is a Losing Game (live)
by Amy Winehouse

...you will be sorely missed. Not only are 3 of your songs in my top 5 most played songs ever, the last song I was playing in my iPod before I heard the unfortunate news happened to be one of yours. It's still paused midway. Requiescat in pace.

Watch & Listen to This

British model and wife of the White Stripes' Jack White, Karen Elson sings this haunting-yet-melodic bluesy piece which features a slight folksy twist. I love this song, I think it's got a certain sense of nonchalance to the tone and lyrics that I find appealing. But I must say it does certainly sound more like a song produced by a band than a solo artist. Nevertheless, take a listen:

Also, this song was featured in Tom Ford's Spring/Summer 2011 show. Karen Elson herself is one of the models at 0:38. And if you watch the entire video, you will find that amongst the models are actresses, Rita Wilson, Julianne Moore, Rinko Kikuchi and singer, Beyonce.

East End | Beyond Retro

So I found the place I've been meaning to hit in London for quite sometime. And during my last trip to London a week ago, I just figured out that it was actually really close to the site for my assignment; which is in Cheshire Street, just off Brick Lane. That's the thing about the Whitechapel/Shoreditch area: you never quite know what you may find during each visit.

Being one of the most famous vintage shops in London, it's no surprise that Beyond Retro has an extensive amount of vintage clothing. Racks after racks of mens and womens clothing and accessories which, compared to some other vintage shops in the area, have been neatly categorized. But hunting through shops like these take plenty of time if you want to score something you actually like in your size and in keeping to your budget.

So, naturally, I left empty handed. I really love these shops with their massive inventory of seemingly random pieces of clothing, each unique and different from the other. But for the most part, I go there just for browsing and perhaps to get some inspiration. For a second-hand item, it's surprisingly not cheap.

...and watch this video which was filmed just outside Beyond Retro and in the surrounding area.

Listen to This

This song from Danish band The Asteroids Galaxy Tour is a bit old, but if you haven't heard it, it's worth a listen I gotta say. It's got a slightly extraterrestrial 70s psychedelic pop thing going on which locks in perfectly well with the lead vocals' unique raw voice. Perfect for day dreaming in the summer.

The City Lights
by Umbrellas
from the album Umbrellas

It's Monday and i'm truly feeling the Monday blues. Well, partly because I'm room-ridden since I'm a little under the weather today and making trips to the bathroom. But worry not as I'm self-medicating. The only thing one should worry for me is for my work as I've still go a tonne of things to do. This panic attack I'm having right now would seem like a nice mild headache compared to the insane emotional turmoil I'm about to have in less than a week.

Shut Up and Let Me Go
by the Ting Tings
from the album We Started Nothing

Shut up and let me go
This hurts what I can't show
For the last time you have me in bits
Now shut up and let me go

For fear of living in regret
I've changed since from when we first met

Now oh so easily you're over me
Gone is love, it's me that ought to be moving on
You're not adorable
I want something un-ignorable

I ain't freakin', I ain't fakin' this
I ain't freakin', I ain't fakin' this
I ain't freakin', I ain't fakin' this
Shut up and let me go, hey!

Get to know the Swedish indie artist Lykke Li and her sinewy vocals mixed perfectly with the gritty beats and lyrics which view the world with an alarming stark honesty. And do check out her other songs while you're at it. You'll be able to recognize the consistent haunting echoes of ghosts accompanied by primal drum beats.

Watch & Listen to This

I love it when Rihanna reinvents herself every time a new album of hers gets released. And I admire the image she's projecting right now, fiery red hair, floral prints and all. She's loosening up and is definitely less severe than her previous image for the Rated R album and slightly turning back to her Caribbean roots. Her video tells it all: not taking things too seriously. Maybe I should take that as a life lesson.

Electro Pop-Art with a nod to her Caribbean roots. I find inspiration in the 80's-esque bold choice of colour and graphics. And yes I do realize this video has been around for months. It's just that it took a bit of time for me to appreciate her work.

Watch & Listen to This

Oldies bring me back to when my family and I go on our trips to KL by car and my dad would load up the player with all these old tunes. This song is NOT one of them, but the tune, beat and feel of it seems to emulate the very easy, sentimental, life-is-good sorta mood that I commonly associate with oldies. And the thing is, it's spanking new! The recently released video also tries to bring back that nostalgia with grainy clips throughout, simple scenes and very backward 'special effects'. I call it the New Oldies.

She acts, she sings, she dances...what more can Zooey do?! And she's as cute as a button. I love this video, it's refreshingly simple with an old school feel (without the high-school-musical over-glossiness that i'll admit I've never watched, but is quite evident in the trailers). And it's a great uplifting summery song which would be in my play list for a long time.

Just promise me you fully load this video first, then watch it full screen.
