Dad's Tie
I like things which have a story to it. This tie belonged to my dad and he probably wore it back sometime in the 70s or 80s or something. I'm not completely certain. But what I'm most surprised about is its proportion. It's narrow without being too skinny and the length is just right as the point of the tie is supposed to hit right at your belt line.
I guess you can call it a vintage tie but it still looks as good in this modern context while giving off a tinge of retro feel. With that tie, I decided to let the rest of my clothes take a back seat and played them down to basics.
I also got another tie which I hope to wear in the future. Definitely not soon since the weather here is fucking insane. It's so hot I can feel the sun burning my skin. It's so hot that I'm bathed in sweat everytime I get home from class. It's. So. Hot. That my flesh is about to melt off my bones when I step outside during mid-day.

Spot On: Jean Paul Gaultier X Levi's
These garments are pretty edgy but I think they would look good in most guys' wardrobes.
I would love to see these pieces hit Malaysian stores. But I'm not counting on it.

- raw denim jacket with contrasting red stitching.

- white trimming detail on the jacket with a red undercollar.

- I'm most attracted to this bondage/skydiving-inspired denim jacket.

- Denim shorts with an interesting striped pattern on the reverse side.

- Jeans with multiple straps.
I've never really liked jean jackets but the bondage inspired ones sure got me captivated.

Watch the clothes.
I'm sure most people would have watched Sherlock Holmes by now since its release about 2 weeks ago. Reviews were quite mixed from my friends. Some found the story deviating from its original plot whilst others welcomed the modern twist and breath of fresh air from director Guy Ritchie.
To be honest, I myself thought it was a decent movie. I found the setting and filmography captivating in the dreary grey London setting. Oh how I love gloomy weather. I liked how the movie unfolded and how it was presented with the frequent flashbacks when deducing a scenario. But more than that, I was extremely awed by the costumes.
I thought the costume designer did a splendid job in creating the clothes. They were absolutely stunning. Jackets, coats, fitting three-piece suits, high club collars, braces, scarves, neckties, hats, waistcoats. I was drowning in a sea of tweed, knits, herringbone and prince of wales checks. Well, drowning in a good way of course. These are the clothes, that I myself, and I'm sure many others too, would wear today.

- Gorgeous three-piece suit in tweed.

- This shot is serioualy making me toy with the idea of getting braces.

- I absolutely loved this sleek almost black jacket with the straps dangling down the middle as worn by Jude Law. It was my favourite piece in the movie and stood out even though it was only featured briefly in the dinner scene.
Frankly, I enjoyed the movie mostly because of the clothes and furnishings and settings. I liked how it was so rich and gritty at the same time. Good stuff there. I also found it interesting that the iconic deerstalker hat that is very much associated with Sherlock Holmes was somewhat non-present. Instead, it was swapped with fedoras and newsboy caps. As for the movie as a whole, as I said earlier, not mind-blowing but...decent.

Reversible
I think this shirt is really innovative. It would have been your regular run-of-the-mill white shirt had it not been for the fact that there are 2 collars and 4 sleeves. It's a double sided shirt where you wear it like you would a normal shirt except there are 2 sleeves dangling at your waist and you just have to tie them. You can also reverse the thing and wear the other side. But it will probably be more interesting if it wasn't all white. Maybe a dip-dyed gradient?

Shorts: The Long and Short of it.
Then comes the debate of how 'short' should shorts be? Well, I've done some reading up on this matter in magazines and online and have more or less complied the information and digested it into the following:
- Shorts are all about the length and the fit. There are cargo shorts which are slightly baggy with pockets, ones which are more slim fitted but still casual, tailored ones and those typical khaki shorts. Personally I prefer a pair of fitted shorts because they tend to look more sleek (And I said FITTED and NOT 'FIGURE HUGGING' because skin-tight shorts are awful). But then again, I have loose ones as well when comfort comes first.
- When you wear shorts, they are supposed to sit comfortably on your natural waist which is about 2 inches below the belly-button. And you should be able to stick in about 2 fingers at the waist band so that it's fitted and still comfortable and you're still able to have a meal without having to unbutton them.
- The length of shorts really are to your preference. But the length should fall between slightly covering your knees to about 4 inches above your knee. Put four fingers above your knee, that's about the shortest they should go. Any shorter than that is considered short shorts and that's a whole other topic. Another tip is stand straight with your arms on your side and the tip of your middle finger should be the shortest they should reach.
- Shorts should not go wayyy past your knees. Shorts which are too long may end up looking like pants which are too short (does that make sense?). If your shorts are halfway through your calves, then they might as well be capris and guys usually don't wear capris. It's about proportions. Just remember that shorts which are too long cuts off your legs and make you look shorter; and you don't want to look short do you?
- You should have more or less decent looking legs to pull off shorts. And the word 'decent' is quite subjective. Some believe that you should have fit legs to be able to wear shorts. Others say that skinny legs are also alright. Some think that you shouldn't have too much hair or scars, etc. So, ask a friend when you're trying out shorts for a second opinion.
Here are some examples of the good:
- Knee Length Shorts which skim the knees are a good length to get started on.Gianfranco Ferre, Spring/Summer 2010
- Knee Length Shorts.Armand Basi
- Above-the-knee shorts.D&G, Fall/Winter 2006
- A good length for board shorts.Bottega Veneta, Spring/Summer 2010
- A good length for shorts.Neil Barrett, Spring/Summer 2009
And the bad:
- Let's be honest, these are just too short.Trussardi 1911, Spring/Summer 2010
- HELL NO...TOO LONG! You'd look like a midget in these.Shorts are great when it's just too hot or when you want to break away from your everyday routine of jeans/pants. Just mixing up the wardrobe a little.
Aside from that, one thing I don't get are the board shorts. They are called board shorts for a reason: for surfing and/or activities related to getting drenched. Don't wear them out for other occasions for god's sake. THEY ARE NOT CASUAL WEAR. THEY ARE SWIMWEAR!!!

Being honest
Now, I'll be really honest with you, I did have a hidden agenda going all the way there. I went there to shop.
I already had in mind a few things I wanted to buy. A shirt, a pair of shoes...maybe a t-shirt? Things I've been thinking of getting for a while now. So, off to the shops I went. One by one. I tried a pair of shoes at one of the shops.....too tight. Then I headed off to the dressing room at Zara with a white shirt in tow.....too.....erm.....see through. And then to a slew of other shops in which I tried on a variety of clothing which on normal circunstances would look absolutely acceptable to anybody. But the thing is I always manage to point out to myself little things about the item which would make me dislike it. The length. The material. The colour. The fit. The price.
I ended up frustrated and dissapointed as I was left empty handed. But my overly critical clothing choices is a blessing in disguise, especially in these trying economic times. So instead of clothing, I spent my money on groceries, went home and made myself a good meal. Ahhh...satisfaction.

Shoe Lust

There are these pair of shoes I wanted that you would have probably heard of. The Laceless Converse. I thought they looked good and above all else, convienient as they are easy to slip-on and you don't have to bother about the laces because there are none. The only reason I didn't get them is probably because I already own two good pair of sneakers.
But then I spotted these:

From this angle, they seem similar to the Laceless Converse. But take a closer look and you'll notice that they have these wide elastic bands which cover the other half of the shoe giving it an asymetrical look which is so AWESOME it's crazy!

They're called 'Skymra Canvas' sneakers by Tretorn. I don't even know if they sell Tretorn sneakers in Malaysia.! I WANT these sneakers!

They come in an array of colours and can either be canvas or leather (pictured above). Someone please buy these!!! If not for me, for yourself!

The Skinny of it
Hedi Slimane may be credited as the person who's faux-hawk hairstyle inspired David Beckham to adopt one which was then popularised. But it was his stint at Christian Dior which was one of the defining moments in his life which catapaulted him into fashion stardom with his very own 'Slimane Look'. He was the guy who rejuvenated Dior with the launch of Dior Homme. His intervention with Dior saw the birth of a more slimmed-down look. The fit of the clothes were of utmost importance. They were designed for the leaner, skinnier man.
I've been told time and again by family and most of my friends *points finger at everyone I know* that I am skinny. Legs are supposedly the hardest place to add mass. So owning a pale pair of peg-looking legs were not unusual. However, my pair of 'chicken legs' became a source of mild embarassment to me back in high school. Thus earlier in my life, I would usually cover up my hairy pair of chopsticks by wearing baggy jeans, khakis and loose cargo pants. I figured that they would give the illusion of bulkiness which I absolutely lack.
But then suddenly, something happened. Hedi Slimane was at the helm of Dior which gave way to the slimmer, leaner look I mentioned. People all around the world were embracing this sharp, fitted look with a punk edge. It was a phenomenon. Thinness suddenly became the 'in' thing. Even celebs dove into the look. Pete Dorethy's pair of toothpick-thin legs got him to shag supermodel Kate Moss. Jude Law suddenly sported skinny jeans. And punk rock bands such as Fall Out Boy were also very into the narrow look.
I may have shunned the anaeroxic look at first. Swearing off skinny jeans, and avoiding tight fitting clothes. But just about a year and a half ago, I decided to be bold and try to experiment. I bought my first-ever pair of skinny jeans and slapped them on. My friends said I looked just fine but some still criticized my lamp post-like figure. But the truth is, my wearing slim cut clothes had a deeper meaning than just fashion. On some level, I was acknowledging my skininess. Accepting what god has given me. I was finally embracing every bony crevice of my spindly legs. It felt liberating as I no longer had to camouflage them everytime I step out of the house. It was as though I was flaunting them now. I also begun to change my style and buy more fitted clothes which would do justice to my tiny figure.
Hedi Slimane left Dior a year ago. And as for now, the skinny phase is already blowing over. The bulky look is again taking over. But you know what, screw that. I'm not for one to follow fashions. I say wear what you look good in and be bold to experiment. If the slimmed-down look suits you, by all means go for it. If you're on the hefty side, steer clear of it.
Here's Hedi Slimane for Dior's Fall 2005 collection which has a rock inspired look. It still features what Slimane is famous for: drain-pipe trousers which hug the legs very much like skinny jeans. Personally, I like the first and third look the most.

Resistance
So basically my weekend was spent disassembling things and packing. Nothing much worthy of knowing unless you want me to explain every little tedious detail of the packing. No? Of course you don't. I left KL yeaterday at around 3.30pm after making a pit stop at One-Utama. Something I did notice there was the Mid-Year sale was back and banging in KL! The majority of the shops there were having sales and promotions. I'm a tad dissapointed that classes have not started which would place me in KL and very near to the major shopping malls. *grunts* But looking at the bright side, I get to spend more time in Penang Island, I spend less money and I am able to curb myself from over-spending or drooling on the many temptations of goodies that Penang does not offer.

Shopping Plans
Okay, so i've already started shopping for my Chinese New Year clothes and i'm actually nearly done. Just have a few more things to purchase. I've already gotten all the tops and the clothings left I need to get are bottoms and shoes...but the shoes are optional. I'm considering whether I should show you guys what I bought...maybe i'll just wait until Chinese New Year and only take pictures then.
I think i'm gonna buy jeans for my bottoms. Currently I have a stong liking for dark indigo and black coloured denim. Those unwashed unfaded types with a slim, straight or slight boot cut. Not really into the slouchy baggy jeans but I do have a pair of those. The reason i'm not getting the distressed faded denim it's coz I wanna wear them in myself and let them mould and shape to my err...legs...you know, when you wear your jeans without washing then for like a month and they begin to feel perfectly fitted to you.
So, as I was saying, dark denim. Yup, that's what I plan to get. And they make your legs look longer too! These are just some examples:
- Straight cut dark-coloured denim by DKNY
- Slim-cut dark indigo denim by GuessAnother thing I plan to get for CNY are waistcoats! Yes. I've been seeing a lot of them at the Topman shops and they really look good. I wonder whether I look good in them though. But i'm so gonna get one of them for the New Year!
- Charcoal grey waistcoat by Topman. Topman has the best crap! And about the shoes, well i'm not planning to get them unless I find one at a really good deal. I'm not the average person who'd pay like 300 ringgit for a pair of Nikes...well actually I hate nikes...but the point is that I'd only buy shoes when my old ones are nearly worn out. But I anticipate i'll be needing more dressier shoes next year for upcoming class presentations. So I might end up with formal dress shoes for CNY.

- If anyone wants to get me these shoes and I mean ANYONE...by all means, go ahead! These are the most darn good-looking shoes i've seen in a while. Even the bag looks fantastic!
This guy says it all:

I Heart Shopping
You should have see the people in MNG who had to get in line just to make their way into the changing room. Pure madness. I don't recall having to queue up to get into the changing room. Sad. Okay, so we did more shopping and covered the entire mall which i'm no going to elaborate on.
The girls felt pretty bad coz they felt I was being dragged down along their shopping extravaganza. But I was like "Drag me down...drag me down!" If you haven't figured it out already from my previous posts, I LOVE SHOPPING. So when I told them that, they were like "Really? Great!"
I like shopping. That's the truth! I mainly shop for clothes because let's face it, most of the outlets in a mall are fashion stores. But I also look for books, tech gadgets, magazines, cds, shoes (I think that counts as fashion as well) and food....if there's such a thing as shopping for food.....but I guess you call that grocery shopping. Oh what the heck, I live to eat. So if there's ever such a thing as food shopping, i'm in!
Okay, so I think i've made it pretty clear that I like shopping. It's more than a past time. But I don't always end up with something in hand like last Friday when I only literaly only spent RM1 in Queensbay Mall for the parking fee. Yeah, I really wanted to buy the Summer issue of Nylon Guys magazine but they ran out of it. Why didn't I buy it the other day when I saw it...grrr.
As I was saying, I like shopping. I always try to shop only during promotions, sales or best-buy periods because, why pay retail when you can get the item at half-off? But more often than not I end up not purchasing anything because:
- Most things are way too expensive.
- I wanna save my money.
- I don't need the item even if it's like super cheap (i've learnt my lesson from this one coz in the past, i've bought things which I didn't really really like or need but I only got coz it's cheap. And in the end it's like I don't even use it, making it a complete waste of money)
- I wanna save my money ( I know i've said that before but...you gotta save money!)
- The sales only apply to the crappy items.
- There are no sales at all!
- Sometimes, i'll start to think something like this: "Wah, the cost of this shirt can buy me a plate of Char Koay Teow everyday for one whole year!!!"
So that's why I don't buy that many things. I know you're probably thinking in a sarcastic tone: "Riiight..." But it's quite true. I don't shop a lot. I window shop a lot. I guess it's the illusion that whenever I go to a mall, I shop, which it completely untrue.
A penny saved is a penny earned.

The best movie!

Today Zhi Xiang and I went to Gurney to watch the highly anticipated movie "Pirates of the Caribbean 3: At World's End.' Okay, that was like the best movie i've seen so far this year. Really just SO good. I could totaly watch it again if I wanted to. It was worth sitting for 3 hours in the freezing cinema. Apparently, Zhi Xiang didn't watch the second installment, so before going into the cinema I kinda summarized it for him (Although, I'm kinda bad at summarizing movies). But he still managed to follow the story. Anyways, I was wondering, is it just me or do other people find it difficult to differentiate between Lord Beckett and the Norrington guy...you know the two British people with the curly curly white hair? I think it's gotta be the hair...yeah, it confuses me. Makes them look the same.

-holes!?
-scratch...with oozing blood...OOOOZING!!! (Nah, just kidding)Tuesday, May 29, 2007
Mundane
I had a small problem with my car the other day. When I was about to go out, my car remote decided to fail on me. I couldn't use the keys to open otherwise the alarm would go off. The batteries were A-okay. Must be a circuit thing. But the next day, it was back to normal. Urgh..I hate the damn thing.

Yesterday, Jeff and I watched 'Blades of Glory" in the mall. He kept making me insist it would be a good movie and I was like "It's gonna be really really great." I tell you, it was real hilarious, we laughed our heads off. The two of us were probably the loudest in there.
Anyway, Jeff treated me to lunch at nando's (how great right...Thank You Jeffrey) and then we were off walking around the mall. I went home empty-handed but Jeff had like a gazillion shopping bags with him. He was on shopping spree it seems. He bought two t-shirts and two bottoms in one day. Two outfits in a day (way to go!). But while he was queing at the counter in one of the shops, he was like "Oh no...I have to carry the Jusco bag all around the mall." I was like "What the...seriously? Seriously!?" It seems someone is becoming brand conscious. But when he asked me to carry the Jusco bag for him I went "You know what...my hand's feeling a bit sore right now." Haha. We spent 6 hours and 58 minutes there. But to me it seemed shorter. Time passes when you're having fun.
I was supposed to go to KL this weekend but it turns out, I don't have to. Apparently I can register from Penang and that would make everything so much easier. I hate the thought of a 4 hour drive just for a mere two days. It's so not worth the energy and time. But this means I won't be able to buy the iPod dock. You see, i'm planning to buy myself an iPod dock for my room. And if i'm not mistaken, it can double as an alarm clock. Sometimes I like to drift into sleep whilst listening to music. I totaly have to get it.

It's all about the money
First incident:
It's afternoon. I'm alone in my car. An old chinese guy knocks on the driver's side window. I rolled down the window just a little. Conversation translated from hokkien:
Old Man: Do you have 20 ringgit?
Me: Huh?
Old Man: I don't have any money and I need to buy food.
(I had two 50 ringgit bills in my wallet at that time)
Me: Uhhh...sorry but I didn't bring out my wallet today.
Old Man: You don't even have like 10 ringgit with you?
Me: Sorry...
Old Man: Okay.
He leaves on his bicycle.
Second incident:
It's about 10:30pm. I'm walking back to my home from Gurney Plaza, alone. The street was void of pedestrians. An indian guy on a motorcycle pulls over and stops me midway. He's in his early 20's and speaks fluent english.
Him: Umm...excuse me, I don't mean to bother you but can you help me?
Me: Yes?
Him: My handphone fell from my pocket and my bike's out of petrol. Can you spare me some money?
(At this time, I had about 15 ringgit and I was wondering what does his handphone falling off have anything to do with his need of money for petrol. Furthermore, I didn't know how much fuel was required to travel a certain distance)
Me: I'm sorry I spent most of my money in Gurney earlier.
Him: Come on, are you saying you don't even have 1 ringgit?
Me: I'm really sorry but I can't help you.
Him: Alright, thanks.
He rides off and I walk back home...fast.
I hardly meet with such incidences and thus I can't distinguish the people who truly need help and those who're faking it. Plus, i've heard stories from my friends who have been conned of their possessions before and so, I was really skeptical. And when I called Jeff later that night to relate the incident he was all like: Yeah what if you whip out your wallet and he snatches it from your hands and scoots away! I do feel a little bad for having to reject their wishes but I do not want to have to risk myself for such meager things. I am sorry but I have no regrets.
If the same thing happened to you, what would you have done? Have you had any similar experiences?
On a seperate note, guess who I spotted folding clothes and wishing 'Welcome' to customers!
.jpg)
It's Jeremy! And he's working in F.O.S. in Gurney Plaza! His supervisor was apparently away so we talked until he didn't even wish the following customers 'welcome'. Then we walked around in the shop and he abandoned his duties (if he had any) to become my personal shopper...muahaha. He would tell me which ones are new arrivals and which ones are popular among the shoppers and stuff like that. Then summore let me use his employee's discount. I sure hope he doesn't get fired for doing all that! Haha.

Gotta love the Mag!
Alright, back to the magazine thing. I absolutely love to read magazines! Love 'em to death!!! It's a bible which gets updated every other month and with so many different kinds. Men's Folio, GQ, Details...love 'em all!!! Thank god for their existance or else WHAT AM I TO READ!!! Magazines are like (and I quote) "a shinning beacon of hope."
All hail the carefully constructed flow of information and articles and the pictures arranged in such a way to tempt and tantilize. And they all converge in such a way as to become an all-inspiring book of wisdom handing out tips on fashion, style news and beyond! Okay, I'm exaggerating a little. But unfortunately, I certainly can't buy all of them and most of them come slightly pricey. Bummer. So, that's why I now prefer to go to some Popular or MPH bookstore and read them up without paying...and ooohh yeah, the air-conditioning's free too!

- The bible: random issues
Today I went to Prangin Mall for a little shop, shop, shop with Damien and Jeff. Nice to see Damien after so long. Chris was supposed to be there too but apparently he tried to call us several times but my cell was in my bag (so I couldn't hear it ring) and in the end, he kinda went home. Sorry 'bout that! But anyway, we did go here and there and looked for stuff to buy. But we only purchased some accessories and no clothes at all...sad right?
It seems to me that Prangin Mall is just not what it was like last time, when bargains were rife and everyone was bound to buy loads and loads. Sure, there are promotions a bit but most of the clothes were plain UGLY! You really gotta go through all of them to be able to find an item of clothing which suits you and it's really not even worth buying something not on sale since a brand new item from any non-branded store is priced about the same as an item of a better well-known brand (in terms of quality and style too).

Talk about inapropriate!
Lately, I've been hearing news from my former high school about all the changes in the rules and regulations regarding the dress code. Just recently, they were trying to put a ban on those thick framed glasses. How are students going to see then? What a strict dress code! According to most of my friends, they point their finger to Mrs. B.W. (Initials used for safety here) Its quite true that she is behind all this and I can't blame the students for hating her. But just today as I was shopping in Gurney Mall, I spotted her. And of all the things she could have worn to a public place like a mall, she wore:
